Tiffany Outlet bites the dust

November 10, 2011 at 8:05 am 87 comments

Well, I’d LOVE to lay claim to this – seems that the shonky Chinese website I complained about, Tiffany Outlet, has bitten the dust. Actually, it looks like the real Tiffany is suing the asses off a ton of shonky commercial websites, not just Tiffany Outlet. I’ve been campaigning against Tiffany Outlet I admit – via this blog, via Twitter and so on. I still have the email address for Tiffany Outlet – must send them an email to say “looks like you’re toast”. But I’m sure I’m just one of many poor sods that were taken in by shonky counterfeiters.

This is what the website of Tiffany Outlet used to look like:

And this is what it looks like now:

Notice anything? Oooh yeah baby: looks like Tiffany Outlet has been served Notice and the site has been taken down. If you go to the site, you’ll see a whole host of legal documents. As someone with a law degree, I naturally waded my way through them to find the cause of action. And here’s the gist:

  • The plaintiff, Tiffany (NJ) LLC, filed an action against various unknown business entities who operate websites that advertise and sell counterfeit jewelry allegedly bearing Tiffany’s registered trademarks;
  • A number of these entities also incorporate “Tiffany” into their website domain names;
  • It seems the named defendants (who appear in Schedule A) are caught within the Judicial District of Nevada – presumably because they were distributing or selling into that jurisdiction via interactive commercial websites;
  • Willful and intentional infringement and counterfeiting of Tiffany’s trademarks allegedly took place in total disregard of Tiffany’s rights and have taken place despite the defendants knowledge that their use of Tiffany’s trademarks was and is in direct contravention of Tiffany’s rights;
  • The defendant’s registration of several domain names, which incorporate at least one of Tiffany’s registered trademarks, constitutes cyberpiracy in violation of 15 U.S.C. § 1125(d); and
  • Irreparable injury to Tiffany has been caused by the defendant’s unlawful activities.

There appear to be 223 defendants Tiffany is hot on the trail of. I checked out the websites of about 20 of them and they now all display the Notice To Defendants.

I need to look into this further and found out the current state of the lawsuit. But I just had to do a quick post because I’m very pleased that Tiffany is taking action against shonky Chinese counterfeiters. I think the cheap knock-offs we’ve all no doubt bought in China, Hong Kong, Thailand etc probably brought us momentary satisfaction but, let’s face it, denied the rights of the legitimate maker of the product. Time has come for the knockoff sites and counterfeiters to bite the dust.

      I can’t find them in the list of defendants – but hopefully Tiffanys will be after them soon! Thanks for the comment.

    I just got shafted on this site. Wish I had done my research before, they are clearly referencing the real tiffany site with hyperlinks, etc.

    It is a wolf in sheep’s skin for sure.

    Been on these sites just now. Thank goodness I checked your blog. However all the sites are back up. Scrolling down I am seeing at least 20 or so! I think they are impossible to shut down. Spoke with a rep in Tiffamy store (Tampa, Florida) and they are very aware at store level.

      The site I had the “issue” with was http://www.tiffany-outletsale.com
      I just searched “Tiffany Outlet” on Google and found http://www.tiffanyoutletsales.com

      May or may not be the same site – they might have altered their domain name.

      http://www.tiffany-outletsale.com still has the Notice to Defendants up.

      So everyone – BE REALLY AWARE of what you’re doing. The sites masquerading as Tiffanys are crooks and opportunists – they will take your money and run. Only buy from the real Tiffanys – yeah sure might cost more but it’s the real deal.

      Personally, I hope that the real Tiffanys doesn’t give up and hangs all these crooks out to dry.

      I’m in hot contest with my credit card company over the whole thing. This has been going on for some months. I’m just thankful those crooks didn’t charge my credit card twice – because the first order on the screen didn’t work, so I had to do it again.

      Everyone out there just needs to be aware of these SCAM SITES and CROOKS masquerading as Tiffanys. It’s not worth trying to get something on the cheap just so you can say you have a Prada or Louis Vuitton or something from Tiffanys. What you get is RUBBISH, CRAP and then the crooks treat you like you’re an idiot.

      They offered to refund me $15.00 – I decided to go public with the whole thing and warn anyone I could.

      I’m very glad that so many people are reading my posts about Tiffany Outlet and leaving comments.

      This is why I get SO annoyed at these scam artists and fraudsters. Your husband was trying to buy you something lovely for Valentine’s Day (full brownie points to him) – only to be duped by these charlatans. I doubt you’ll get a refund but I’m hoping you do. Thx for leaving the site URL. Be warned everyone. We have to do our very best to expose these shoddy websites and their shoddy goods that are trying to sell off to unsuspecting people like you and me!!

    Thank you for the warning. I was looking for a Paloma Picasso daisy earrings and the Tiffany outlet website came up. I found pictures of the earrings but they seemed really cheap! That is when I goggled to see if Tiffany really has an outlet store…then I found your postings. I am glad I did not become a victim of their scam.

      Could be wrong but looks to me like they’ve changed their domain name slightly and are back up and running. If anyone has information on this – please leave a comment.

      Either way, they are still dodgy scam artists. I now know to spot some clues:

      * note the site http://www.tiffanyoutlet-outlet.com uses “Tiffany and Co”. The REAL Tiffany is Tiffany & Co (i.e. using the ampersand). Although the site uses the ampersand in the title, throughout the text you will see “and”. Go and look at the REAL Tiffany site: http://www.tiffany.com – you will not see “and” even in the description of items;
      * if you read everything carefully, you will spot spelling errors and Chinglesh (Chinese English). Here’s an example from the site just quoted “Tiffanyoutletmall.com wishes you to be satisfied with every purchase but we know that sometimes this is not the case”. “Wishes you to be satisfied”, as any native English speaker would recognise, is not the right sequence of words.

      What you need to do is go through the site with a fine tooth comb – there will be clues that you aren’t dealing with the genuine Tiffany, rather a scam Tiffany impersonator.

      I am currently investigating where the REAL Tiffany is up to with chasing these fraudulent sites. I’ll keep you all posted but in the meantime, DON’T buy online from any of the sites listed in this blog post or comments section.

      I’m pleased to have personally helped some of you save $$$ and I hope to continue doing so!

        You are not an idiot at all Rose (and it’s Kim not Katherine). The dodgy Chinese scam artists are the IDIOTS for thinking that they will get away with scamming people’s money and impersonating the real Tiffany & Co. I know we all like to get a Brand name item for less money but we are denying $$ to the company who is really behind the Tiffany brand. And worse: lining the pockets of fraudsters who take your money and run, without a care in the world.

    • 23. thinkingshift  |  March 10, 2012 at 8:04 pm

      Well Rose, despite losing $$ myself, I’m very pleased to have saved many of you from losing your own $$ to these dodgy scam artists. Take that $170.00 and walk into a REAL Tiffany store and buy something genuine and of quality.

    Here is yet another one. I was thinking of purchasing a few items and thought I would check them out before doing anything. My first clue was that they were offering a free Tiffany silver polishing cloth. I have several real items from Tiffany & Co and no, they do not give you a polishing cloth. If you see this on any website, it is a quick way to tell if it is a scam.

      Remember that only Tiffany’s itself has the right to sell Tiffany stuff. So this is the real website http://www.tiffany.com/ There are also signs on the site you ask about that it is not genuine. I won’t give too much away as the shonky Chinese websites will be learning how to improve – but just check out the bottom of the screen under heading More Reviews. Read the first sentence and you will know it is not written in correct English. Read the second sentence and you’ll see that even more clearly. There are also other signs but these alone will tell you what you’re dealing with.

      • 40. thinkingshift  |  October 16, 2013 at 9:29 pm

        I’m glad you get the idea Ann. The use of the word “shonky” is intentional. It is good Australian slang and has abundant meaning for Aussies. This is not a “forum” – it’s a blog – and if you don’t like what you’re reading, may I kindly suggest you go elsewhere. You are correct in what you say to a point – yes, in this day and age, we are becoming more aware of dishonest people on the internet but many of us are still taken in. It is also not “shonky” to try and buy something authentic for an “unreasonable” price (however this may be defined). We live in a world of troubled economic times = many sales, discounts = many authentic items are being offered at hugely discounted prices. The purpose of the post is awareness raising and you can see by comments (other than yours) that it has helped people and saved them from becoming victims. If I have helped people do this, then I don’t give a toss how many times I’ve used the word shonky.

    Count me among the latest victims of Tiffany Outlets. The site that scammed me is http://www.tiffanyoutlet007.com/

    I never bought from Tiffany before and didn’t even think there was anything fishy about it.

    I got the wrong item and emailed them via their “Contact Us” tab (my cc was also charged more than what was shown when I made the order, and then also found a “foreign transaction fee” on my cc that had me scratching my head). I got a response, pretty rough english grammar, asking for pictures of the product I received to help them sort out what when wrong. I replied with pictures of what I recieved, a picture of my actuall order invoice from the website, and a picture of the product i ordered from them. No response. That’s when I thought to google “Tiffany Outlet” and came across you’re blog.

    Now it looks like I’m out $75 on something that has zero value, not only being the wrong item but also not being a real Tiffany product at all. I am completely bumbed and hate the feeling of helplessness. I don’t expect any further response from them and feel like it’s time to cut my losses, feel like an idiot for a while, and move on.

    Thanks for blogging about this…I only wish it would have occured to me to google them instead of assuming the super great discount price was real.

Im not one to do a lot of research, but like many of the previous commentors said, “something did not sit right with me”. Im glad this complaint chain was started. I was almost out a lot of money. Thank you to you all for taking the time to warn us.

    How stupid have I been!!! I have ordered 3 items from this website for Christmas presents & my daughters birthday. I am usually very careful not to order online, but I was swayed by the ease & couldn’t face the Christmas rush!!! I have had no contact from them, no goods delivered, & no way to contact them apart from an obviously bogus email address.
    I now assume my stupidity had cost me money that I will now try to retrieve.

    Yes, last month my aunt was about to order from a site and I thought it was a good idea too because I’m hosting a Tiffany themed bridal shower as well. When I looked at the items and the prices, I just felt like it was too good to be true! It was too cheap to be real Tiffany products. So, I called the Tiffany store on Michigan Avenue here in Chicago and a customer service rep told me there is no such thing as a Tiffany outlet and more than likely the websites are from China. I immediately called my aunt who said that she had started her order but did not finish entering her credit card info. She was so happy and grateful that I called her to tell her there was no such thing as a Tiffany outlet! Nevertheless, thank you for being vigilant in your efforts to shut websites like these down!

        Thank goodness indeed Caitlin! People like you, leaving information about these dodgy websites, will help us all avoid the fake stuff.

    I know you feel good knowing this fake tiffany site has been shut down, but there are hundreds of sites just like it. They get shut down, and they just open up a new site, don’t care if it’s temporary, the nature of such “businesses” is that they just keep moving on….confident in the fact that most people see a low price on the bling they desire, and they just jump right in without doing any research first. Most of them are never caught or actually suffer the effects of any lawsuits. Good that you are writing about your experience, though. Hopefully people will learn the age old adage – if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

    Here’s another one. Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a “Tiffany” bracelet under $50. Sad, but glad I didn’t purchase anything.
